Wood Talk Section

Todays wood species is Western Red Cedar, we like it so much we created a stain color specifically for it, it’s called Cedar Tone.

Western Red Cedar trees are capable of growing to heights of 165-200 feet, Western Red Cedar (Thuja Plicata) grows in the Pacific northwestern United States and Canada.  Red Cedar Lumber has exceptional resistance to insects and decay, moderate strength, moderately soft, light in weight, completely non-resinous, works easily and is dimensionally stable with the lowest shrinkage of any North American Softwood species.

Grades

Western Cedar is divided into several grades and are distinguished by heart wood, sap wood in both clear and knotty grades.

Uses

Western Cedar is commonly used for fencing, decking, shingles, exterior siding, post and beams, boatbuilding and even musical instruments.

Care & Maintenance

Western Red Cedar produces its own oil as a preservative but over time this diminishes once the tree is milled into lumber.  Western Cedar is absolutely beautiful when used for exterior projects but will lose its color quickly and turn to an iconic silvery gray.  So I recommend staining and/or sealing it as soon as its installed as long as it is dry if you wish to keep its beautiful color.

If your Western Cedar is already gray it is really easy to restore with the right chemicals, newer wood needs little or no pressure at all to clean but older weathered and extremely aged cedar may need stronger chemicals and more pressure to fully restore. Smooth boards should be sanded after cleaning with a pressure washer to look its best. Western Cedar takes oil based stains really well, looks absolutely beautiful and holds up nicely.  I recommend cleaning cedar yearly, and maintenance coats of stain on flat surfaces every 2 years and on vertical surfaces every 4 years to keep things looking picture perfect.

My Experience

At Stain & Seal Experts we work mainly in Nashville and Middle Tennessee.  We have a predominately treated pine market here in the south but Western Red Cedar is still very common for fencing and timbers.  We love staining cedar because the before and after photos are always world class, in my opinion nothing looks as nice as cedar when stained and sealed with a penetrating oil based stain.

We have found that Western Red Cedar is very stable but sometimes can warp, crack or twist during periods of rapid drying which can be the first 30-60 days after its built or during a winter to spring season change.  We can remedy these issues by staining and sealing Cedar as soon as the moisture content in the wood is at 13% or less.  Usually rough cut fencing can be stained within a week or two of construction and decking needs about 4 weeks to dry out.  Kiln dried cedar can be stained immediately after or before installation. Like other wood species, you can wait a year to stain and the wood will absorb more stain BUT you’re going to have to clean it first and the wood grain will never look as beautiful as it will when stained brand new.  EXPERT Stain & Seal was developed not only to be absolutely stunning but specifically to stop warping, cracking and twisting- no other stain does this.  Remember folks if you have any exterior wood it’s your duty and obligation to get it preserved with a good penetrating oil based product.

Remember, the job is not done until it’s finished.

EXPERT Staining Tips

  1. Prep Work-  If you are a new staining contractor and you are not currently doing a whole lot of masking I highly recommend it.  I used to always spray and pray and I spent more time on my hands and knees with a Waterhouse and scrub brush than I did staining.  I have found that 15 minutes of masking can save you hours of clean up and no to mention it can significantly increase the customer experience.  When a customer looks out the window and sees everything they own perfectly masked they have an increased level of confidence in their decision of hiring you.  If they see you not masking but using a water hose instead to keep everything wet it will raise a red flag for them.  There is certainly a time and place to keep things wet and constantly rinse but masking just might take your staining game to the next level. Once you get things masked you can go fast. Give it a try on your next staining job.

2.  Customer updates- I love to give project updates to our clients usually 1-2 times a day.  Around the halfway point I like to check in and quickly say things are going well, we are right on schedule or we’ve had a delay etc… and then an update at the end of the day on multi day projects.  This is particularly important on commercial jobs but residential clients enjoy these reports too.  A good line of communication between the crew, project manager and the client will really take your professionalism to the next level.

Log Home Restoration and Stain & Sealing!

About 10 years ago I was bidding a fence staining job onsite here in Nashville and I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful log home on the property.  I commented on the home and the homeowner there told me she just had it totally restored and explained all the steps of the process.  The job was obviously world class and as she explained the process I knew I had to start doing these type projects.  Here is what I have learned about the basics of log home restoration and preservation.

Log homes can be log siding, full log construction and cabins can be made up of several types of materials and much of the processes are the same.  Today I will be discussing primarily true log construction.  We’re going to start with a restoration, if the project is new you can skip the step.

Step 1 examine the home and make a plan.  You are looking for damaged or rotted logs that need replacement, damaged or missing chinking, 1/4” or larger or just unsightly cracks and also any crack that runs to the end of a log.  You also need to know what kind of finish is currently on the house so you can properly remove it.

Step 2 Clean the cabin to remove old coatings or degraded wood and organic growth.  This can be done either chemically or with blasting.

Step 3 Inspect and repair or replace any rotted or damaged places in your logs.  Rot spreads and it must be fixed.

Step 4 Buff or sand logs to remove fuzziness from cleaning process.  Blow away dust and debris from cleaning and buffing stages.

Step 5 Tape all cracks that are unsightly, 1/4” or more or go all the way to the end of the log, fill with foam rods and caulk with textured stainable caulking and smooth it with a caulk spoon.  Peel tape and smooth any spots that look off and wait 48 hours to stain.

Step 6 Fill or repair any chinking areas with new chinking and smooth with a chinking tool also need to wait 48 hours to stain.

Step 7 Let the staining begin some homes can be stained by spraying and back brushing others need to be completely brushed by hand.

Back brushing ensures that you cover every square inch of a log home and breaks surface tension pushing the stain product deeper into the wood.

Step 8 Once the stain has cured for 48 hours it’s time to paint the chinking by hand.  This step is the icing on the cake and makes everything pop.

Step 9 Clean up, be sure you clean up all masking materials, all windows are clean, all light fixtures, hardware, gutters, etc… are clean.

If you have a log home or are a log home contractor I recommend  using EXPERT Professional Wood Care products, our cleaners brighteners and strippers work great to prep and our Log & Timber Oil is made specifically to penetrate deep into exterior wood and preserve whatever its used on.

Q&A Up Next

1.Whats the coverage for EXPERT Stain & Seal- Rough Cut Lumber it’s 125-150 sqft per gallon and smooth surfaces 200-225 sqft per gallon.

2.How do you deal with the weather forecast.  I have found that customers completely understand rain delays when it comes to staining and sealing for obvious reasons.  I recommend always plan on staining even if the forecast shows a chance of rain and call it off only when you are certain that it’s going to rain.  I used to call it off when there was a 60% chance then half the time it wouldn’t even rain so I lost a day.  I recommend always plan on getting the job done.
