The number one problem Tom sees when consulting with contractors is that his clients don’t realize that they are the ones in control. You have to believe that you are in control of every aspect of your business. Who you employ, who you work for, how much you charge… it’s all up to you.
Tom says the first step is to “Own Your Stuff” ...what is the underlying issue that is causing your business to not reach its full potential. He says that once you figure out what is holding you back, you just deal with it.
Tom says that business owners need oxygen for their business. He uses this analogy saying that oxygen is money. The number one job in your business is to make money. If you can’t commit to yourself to make money by owning your business, then it is possible you should consider going to work for someone else because all good businesses need good employees.
Caleb asks Tom what his advice is for people who are scared or nervous to quit their 9-5 job with benefits, guaranteed hours, etc. and start their own business. Tom says that he makes sure to tell guys that they have to be the marketer and prospector for their business – that the business owner needs to invest back into his business.
Tom goes over what he thinks a great business needs to make it a success. He talks dollars and when it’s time to push harder or explore other options.
